Chapter 41.5: Yes, Please, I’d Like Some More

Quickly, before I hit the sack: Delgado and Wagner? Yes, nicely done Omar et al. Now we need a catcher. I can even tolerate having Kaz Matsui start the season at second, though it’s not my preference. But we need a catcher. Ramon Castro is not the full-time answer.

Recently saw a comparison between Mets and Yankees projected lineups for opening day.

1B - Push
2B - Yankees
SS - Yankees
3B - Yankees
LF - yankees
CF - Mets
RF - Yankees
C - Yankees
Closer - Push
Starters - Push
Set-up men - Push

Yankees will retain back page headline dominance for at least another year. Both teams make the playoffs, however, as the Mets finally beat the Braves.

Hard to argue with most of of those. The Mets don't really have a catcher, however, so Posada is clearly better than the player to be named later. Same in center with the Mets advantage. I'm biased, but I'd give the Mets the advantage in the starting rotation. But it'll matter more in April. Thanks for your comment.

I guess the Mets are trying to "buy" a championship now. Amazing what a new television network does. It shuts up the lunkhead fans who spent years bashing the Yankees for throwing millions at players. It must be tough to become something that many Mets fans publicly reviled.

The Mets have made some excellent strategic moves this offseason. I do not think Omar is being Minayacal about winning at all costs. That said, however, if he gives away the farm for Manny, he better pray for a couple rings before the end of the decade. I would never bash a team for having a big budget. There is a direct relationship between $ payroll and wins (over a period of years) but not as strong a relationship to championships. I enjoy having a competitive team every year more than one that is good for a couple years and then stinks the next couple. I will admit, however, that victory is sweeter when it is done with home grown talent. As a fan of baseball, it is great to have both types of teams in the game. The David vs Goliath angle never gets old, regardless of which side you favor. Met fans bash the Yankees because the Yankees have been better at being a big market team, not because the Yankees are a big market team. Fans of small market teams should applaud big market teams because it makes their victories and championships that much more memorable.
